Over time, your teeth experience wear and tear. Cracks, cavities and chipped or broken teeth should be treated as early as possible to avoid further complications, such as gum disease or severe tooth decay. Fortunately, our San Jose, CA dental practice can restore your smile by placing fillings over the damaged areas.
Silver fillings are the most commonly applied today due to their strength and durability. While they don’t last forever, they can last for up to 12 years and protect your teeth from further damage.
Composite tooth-colored fillings/Bondings
Nowadays, more and more of our patients are opting to have composite fillings placed, rather than their amalgam counterparts. Composite fillings (dental bondings) are composed of a tooth-colored resin. This means that they are more aesthetically pleasing to the eye than the more common silver fillings.
How are fillings placed?
We will first numb the tooth for your comfort, then remove any decay and clean the area thoroughly before placing the filling. Silver fillings usually take around 20 minutes. Composite fillings/bondings generally take about 10 – 20 minutes longer to place due to the extra care needed to blend the tooth-colored material into your smile. Once we have applied the composite resin, we use a special light to harden the material before polishing and trimming it to match the rest of the tooth surface.
